THE I CHING IS A ECCENTRIC BOOK TO SAY THE LEAST. MANY KNOW OF THE I CHING AS A BOOK OF DIVINATION. MANY INTERPRETATIONS OF THE I CHING EXIST. THREE BROAD CATEGORIES ARE COVERED. DIVINATION OR FORTUNE TELLING, CONFUCIAN IDEAS WHICH ARE SOCIOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL, AND ALCHEMICAL OR TAOIST INTERPRETATIONS. MY FAVORITE INTERPRETATION IS FROM A FELLOW NAMED LUI I MING WHO LIVED IN CHINA AND PUBLISHED HIS WORK IN 1796. HE HAD ONE FOOT IN THE PAST AND YET WISE ENOUGH TO SEE THE COMING LOGIC OF THE MODERN WORLD. THE BEST TRANSLATION IS FROM THOMAS CLEARY. A HARVARD SCHOLAR AND A TAOIST ADEPT.

I CHING MEANS THE BOOK OF CHANGE. IT IS AN ANCIENT BINARY CODE. SOLID LINES ARE YANG OR 1 AND BROKEN LINES ARE YIN OR 0. THERE ARE ONLY 64 HEXAGRAMS, BUT THE GENIUS IS IN THE ENORMOUS MANDALA OF POSSIBILITY WHEN LINES CHANGE AND REARRANGE. THE COMPLEX MATHEMATICS ARE TOO COMPLICATED FOR THIS POST. WE WILL STICK TO THE BASIC IDEAS AND HOW THEY MAY HELP YOU NAVIGATE THROUGH SOME CHANGES.

HEAVEN AND EARTH ARE THE FIRST TWO HEXAGRAMS. HEAVEN IS ALL YANG OR SOLID LINES, WHILE EARTH IS YIN AND ALL BROKEN LINES. HEAVEN IS CONSIDERED FIRMNESS, WHILE EARTH IS FLEXIBLE. THE REMAINING 62 HEXAGRAMS COMMENT ON THE MYRIAD POSSIBILITIES OF FIRMNESS AND FLEXIBILITY. IF ONE IS TO FIRM OR YANG, FLEXIBILITY IS NOT POSSIBLE. BEING TO FLEXIBLE DOES NOT ALLOW FOR FIRMNESS. IDEALLY WE ARE FIRM WITHIN FLEXIBILITY AND FLEXIBLE WITHIN FIRMNESS. WE CAN THINK OF FIRMNESS AND FLEXIBILITY AS ACTION AND UNDERSTANDING, ETERNITY AND CHANGE, MIND OF TAO AND HUMAN CONDITIONING, DOING AND NON-DOING. IN OTHER WORDS THE I CHING IS THE STUDY OF POLARITY OR CHANGE AND THE PROBABLE PATH THE CHANGE WILL TAKE.

THE PATH OFFERED BY THE I CHING DETAILS THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE HUMAN MIND AND CONDITIONING, WITH ALL OF ITS CLINGING AND ATTACHMENT. INTO THE MIND OF TAO AND THE WU WEI OR EFFORTLESS EFFORT. FROM DOING TO BEING OR NON-DOING. READING A HEXAGRAM DAILY WILL OPEN THE MIND TO NEW POSSIBILITY OF CHANGE RATHER THAN THE TYPICAL HUMAN RESPONSE. THEY MAY CHANGE THEIR DETERMINATION DUE TO ILLNESS; THEIR SPIRITS MAY FLAG BECAUSE OF OLD AGE OR THEY MAY STOP WORK BECAUSE OF OBSTRUCTION BY SOME OBSESSION. ALL THESE ARE CASES IN WHICH PEOPLE DO NOT EXERT THE MIND OF TAO AND ARE HINDERED BY EXHAUSTION, SO THEY ULTIMATELY DO NOT ATTAIN THE TAO.

IF THE MIND IS NOT EXHAUSTED EVEN THOUGH THE BODY BE EXHAUSTED, THE PATH IS NOT AT AN IMPASSE EVEN THOUGH THE SITUATION PRESENTS AN IMPASSE, AND ONE CAN BE JOYFUL EVEN WHEN IN DIFFICULTY, THEN THERE IS A DEVELOPMENTAL ASPECT WITHIN EXHAUSTION. BUT EVEN THOUGH BEING ABLE TO REJOICE EVEN IN DIFFICULTY IS SOMETHING PEOPLE CANNOT FULLY ATTAIN, AND THERE WILL INEVITABLY BE A POINT OF EXHAUSTION, NEVERTHELESS IF THEY BECOME EXHAUSTED WHERE THEY SHOULD NOT, THEY WILL NOT ATTAIN DEVELOPMENT. THIS IS BECAUSE THE DEVELOPMENTAL ASPECT OF EXHAUSTION LIES IN BEING CORRECT.

DEALING WITH EXHAUSTION CORRECTLY, GROWING CORRECTLY, WHILE EXHAUSTED ONE GOES ALONG IN HARMONY WITH THE TIME. GOING ALONG IN HARMONY WITH THE TIME IS POSSIBLE ONLY FOR GREAT PEOPLE IMBUED WITH THE QUALITY OF CORRECT BALANCE. GREAT PEOPLE, WHILE BEING VERY WISE, APPEAR TO BE IGNORANT; WHILE BEING VERY SKILLFUL, THEY APPEAR INEPT. RANDOM THOUGHTS DO NOT OCCUR TO THEM, AND THEY CANNOT BE INFLUENCED BY CIRCUMSTANCES. THEIR CONDUCT IS UNAFFECTED, AND THEY ARE NOT CONCERNED WITH EXTERNALS. NOT ONLY DO THEY FIND GOOD FORTUNE WHEREVER THEY ARE, THEY ALSO ACCORD WITH THE ORDER OF LIFE AND ARE BLAMELESS.

AS FOR THOSE WHOSE MAIN CONCERN IS FOOD AND CLOTHING, THEY ARE UNTRUSTWORTHY IN AN IMPASSE, THEY WILL TAKE TROUBLE IN HOPES OF FORTUNES, BUT AS SOON AS THINGS DONT GO THEIR WAY THEY SHOW IT IN THEIR WORDS AND EXPRESSIONS, COMPLAINING AGAINST HAVEN AND BLAMING PEOPLE. SO BLAME GOES ALONG WITH THEM-HOW CAN THIS BRING ABOUT GOOD FORTUNE? THOSE WHO DEAL WITH EXHAUSTION AND IMPASSE RIGHTLY, WHO ARE ABLE TO BE JOYFUL EVEN IN DIFFICULTY, ARE GREAT PEOPLE. THOSE WHO ARE UNTRUSTWORTHY IN AN IMPASSE, WHO TAKE TROUBLE ONLY TO PLEASE THEMSELVES, ARE PETTY PEOPLE. IT MAY BE THE SAME TROUBLE AND THE SAME JOY, BUT THE DISTINCTION LIES IN HOW GREAT PEOPLE AND PETTY PEOPLE RELATE TO THE TROUBLE AND THE JOY. SO THOSE WHO PRACTICE THE TAO SHOULD BY ALL MEANS MAINTAIN RECTITUDE WHEN EXHAUSTED AND AT AN IMPASSE.

LUI I MING LIKES LONG SENTENCES, LOL. PERHAPS THIS STYLE OF DISCOURSE IS WORDY TO SOME. BUT THE POINT IS TIMELY. WE NEED TO MAINTAIN RECTITUDE OR STEADFASTNESS TO THE VIRTUE THAT HAS GOTTEN US THIS FAR, IN THE FACE OF THIS EXHAUSTED WORLD. BE THE FOOL WITH A BIG SILLY SMILE ON YOUR FACE NO MATTER THE DIRE CIRCUMSTANCE. THIS IS BRAVE TALK ON MY PART, THINGS MAY WELL GET MUCH WORSE.
