First Decanate (Scorpio-Scorpio): This gives the person a sexy appearance, a sexual magnetism that seems to have nothing to do with looks or age. The person is strong, has great fortitude. When physical strength requires heroism or determination, this person has it in abundance. There is great depth and intensity. No-one really knows him / her.
With Taurus-Taurus on the Descendant, they tend to be stingy in close relationships, or their partners can be stingy with them. These people need to learn to bend their wills somewhat in favor of others. However, they can be extremely devoted in a deep relationship, and the partner to them likewise. Once the relationship is established, it will last, whether that relationship is business, marriage, or deep friendship.
Second Decanate (Scorpio-Pisces): There are seemingly very sure of themselves. Behind this bold exterior is a sensitive individual who, sooner or later, feels he or she can be hurt by love and puts his or her 'best arrogant foot forward'. Even so, this position can endure more hurt than most. Failure can only spur this person to greater heights after the hurt has subsided. You can't keep this ascendant down for long.
With Taurus-Virgo on the Descendant, there is a tendency to attract mates because of their money or abilities to help this person to make money. Those with this placement criticize their partners or friends too much, or they attract those who do the same thing, and then there is trouble. They may offer helpful 'trouble shooting' but they do not think they need to receive it. However, they can serve these same partners and friends tirelessly, working for them or with them.
Third Decanate (Scorpio-Cancer): Most people see this personality as strong, confident, and enduring. The emotional nature is often released through domestic affairs or religious affiliations. The religious nature is put into orbit through strong emotional pulls of some kind. They have hypnotic personalities that can be used to give others strength and emotional healing.
With Taurus-Capricorn on the Descendant, once they accept marriage they will endure much, either in suffering or in hardship, to sustain the relationship. Their environment will do a great deal to help or hinder them in their efforts to endure. The feelings of responsibility are high with this position.
(Sepharial and Muchery) First Decanate: The nature is a strong, forceful, energetic one, capable of immense feats of prowess, of endurance and courage. In strige, the native is implacable and dauntless, scorning defeat and danger of reversal. The ambitions are high; the spirit of conquest strong; the will is not less exalted and powerful. Strange and impulsive love affairs, sickness, caused through indiscretion or excess, are the fruits of this decan; but the native has faithful servants, and is born, in most cases, to command.
Second Decanate: Honours and dignities await the native of this decan. It is replete with masterful and governing qualities. Proud and haughty of spirit, the native bears high rule, and may become tyrannical. The native is capable of extreme cruelty, unless a strong guiding hand is over it when young. Fame, or a less honourable reputation, is sure to tall to the ative of this decan.
Third Decanate: The nature is prone to excess and folly in love affairs. The passions need to be bridled. Many enemies arise against the native, and secret enmity from females may be expected. In marriage there will be trouble. The passions are quick and volatile, and the nature is capable of great passional devotion, which, however, is liable to bring disastrous results.
Physical Qualities: Scorpio gives a dark or dusky complexion; thick, curling, dark or red hair, sometimes crinkled or frizzy, and growing on the temples more thickly than is common; often some defects in the feet or lower parts of the body; rather thick eyebrows; aquiline features; prominent brows and sharp facial angles. The native is of average height, with a strong constitution, physical resistance and a muscular body inclined on the whole to premature stoutness. The neck is short and the head tends to be inclined forward. The hands and feet are long, rather fleshy or dumpy.
Mental Qualities: Boldness, confidence in self; fond of contests and strifes, very daring when put to the touch; sarcastic, wilful, impulsive, and determined; of fixed views, subtle mind; not easily imposed upon, but sometimes capable of imposition; frequently a fondness for mystery, or some form of research, occult or chemical, shows itself. From the moral standpoint, the native is self-confident, brave, energetic and enduring. He knows what he wants and will do anything to get it. He has a critical mind, which immediately senses what others think. It is difficult to deceive him, for he is intuitive, or else observant. This position gives the native fine possibilities of succeeding through his own industry, knowledge and skill. With Mercury on the cusp of the Ascendant he will be a remarkably good business man; while a good position of Mars will make him a banker or financier who will have to be reckoned with. This position of the Ascendant is also fortunate for surgeons, occultists, and also for meat-dealers. The native will often lose his father or mother early, according to the aspects which Mars sends to the Sun or Moon.

Scorpios project themselves with energy and willpower, and are willing to stake their lives to accomplish their aims. It is futile to attempt to convince them that something cannot be done, since Scorpios will do it or die trying. They fortify their objectives with a tremendous, fixed, emotional intensity. They have the ability to draw on hidden resources of power to attain their ends.
With Taurus on the seventh house cusp, Scorpios attract marriage partners who have wealth to offer. They are co-operative in partnerships but expect some practical gain as a result. They spend money on lovely things that have quality. They also spend money on their partners and take great pride in the fact that they look well.

Numerous political leaders have been born with Scorpio as their rising sign. These people enjoy the use of social power and identification with the need of their people to achieve some sort of organic integration at the national level; but, as they relate to their partners, they draw vital forces from them and they demand concrete results along fixed lines of activity.

In the eighth labour of Hercules, the hero has to find and destroy the Hydra, a nine-headed monster who lives in a cave at the bottom of a murky swamp. At first, he tries to kill the beast while it is still in the water, but every time he cuts off a head three more appear in its place. Finally Hercules remembers the advice of his teacher: 'We rise by kneeling, we conquer by surrendering, and we gain by giving up'. He kneels down into the swamp and lifts the Hydra by one of its heads out of the water and into the air. Withdrawn from the water, the Hydra immediately begins to lose its power and wilt. Hercules cuts off all the heads, but a tenth one appears in the form of a precious jewel which he buries under a rock.
This story is closely related to the dynamics of Scorpio on the Ascendant. In one form or other, those with Scorpio rising must confront or grapple with that which is dark, taboo, hidden or destructive. Some will see the beast externally and fight what is dark and evil 'out there'. For others, the Hydra lurks in the depths of their own psyches, symbolizing such destructive emotions as jealousy, envy, greed, excessive lust or power drives.
Hercules succeeded in slaying the Hydra by lifting it out of the swamp and into the air. Similarly, Scorpio rising must bring into the light of consciousness what is dark and hidden inside. If Scorpionic energy is repressed, it seethes underneath, poisoning the psyche and giving rise to a stench which fouls the atmosphere between people. However, if the full force of these emotions are released in an unregenerate manner, their destructive power may be too much to bear.
A third alternative exists. Rather than either repressing the Scorpio side of the nature or acting it out altogether, it is possible to acknowledge the feelings involved and then transform or rechannel them more constructively. Like the jewel which appears when the Hydra is slain, negative complexes can be changed into something precious. Many artists have produced their best works through redirecting passion, anger or rage into a creative outlet.
The snake sheds a skin when growth and pressure from the inside renders the old skin too tight. Volcanic Scorpio rising accumulates internal pressure until an explosion, release and renewal must occur. By choice or coercion, this sign on the Ascendant wipes out and removes old forms and structures so that new ones can be built.
There is a depth to Scorpio rising which compels those who have this placement to burrow their way to the root of an issue in search of underlying meanings and motivations. Nothing is taken at face value. Like Bluebeard's wife, they may open doors which are better left closed. Scorpio rising draws Taurus on the Descendant to itself. Where Scorpio must challenge, attack, destroy and change, Taurus is patient, stable, down-to-earth and persevering. Taurus is equipped to withstand a Scorpio rising's onslaught and then calmly interject 'Don't forget, darling, dinner is at eight'. Those with Scorpio rising need to develop such Taurean qualities in relationship in order to balance the excessess and extremes of their turbulent and stronly felt passions.
The most obvious physical embodiment of Scorpio rising comes in the form of intense and piercing eyes set in a noticeably penetrating brow.
